Filipino American History Month: FilAms Got Talent
The Filipino American Chamber of Commerce of SouthBay Los Angeles Area (FACC-SLAA) has been recognizing and celebrating October as Filipino American History Month (FAHM) in the City of Carson since 2011, very shortly after the Chamber of Commerce was initially chartered earlier that same year. The celebration of Filipino American History Month in October commemorates the first recorded landfall of Filipinos in the continental United States, which occurred on October 18, 1587, when “Luzones Indios” came ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza and landed at what is now Morro Bay, in Central California. In 2009, U.S. Congress recognized October as Filipino American History Month in the United States.
This year, FACC-SLAA will once again be celebrating Filipino American History Month, with a celebration named FilAms Got Talent (a Dance Group Competition). This will be held at the SouthBay Pavilion Mall (20700 S Avalon Blvd, Carson, CA 90746) from 1:00 until 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 13th, 2018. FACC-SLAA will feature exhibits from various businesses and companies that our members and colleagues throughout the SouthBay, Los Angeles community are involved with. The highlight of our celebration will be a dance competition dubbed FilAms Got Talent, which is open to local dance groups that include at least 2 members of Filipino descent. The top winners, and a number of special awardees, will receive a total of $2,500 in Cash Prizes!
